Description
About
Chiang Mai, sometimes written as Chiengmai or Chiangmai, is the largest city in northern Thailand and the capital of Chiang Mai Province. The city’s strategic location on the Ping River (a major tributary of the Chao Phraya River) ad its proximity to major trading routes contributed to its historic importance.
Chiang Mai City has 24 Buddhist temples (“wat” in Thai). Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the city’s most famous temple, stands on Doi Suthep, a mountain to the north-west of the city, at an elevation of 1,073 meters. It also hosts many Thai Festivals including Songkran, Lor Krathong and Chiang Mai Flower Festival.
